Alex Eala Returns to Miami After Stunning 2025 Run That Shocked the WTA

This is a big week for Alex Eala as she returns to the Miami Open with memories of one of the most remarkable runs on the WTA Tour last season.
The Tournament That Announced Alex Eala
On March 19, 2025, Alexandra Eala produced the best tournament of her young career. Entering the Miami Open with a wildcard, she stunned the tennis world by reaching the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 event.
At that stage of her career, Eala had very little experience against top-ranked players. She had played the main draw in Madrid in 2024 and gained valuable experience in Grand Slam qualifying events, but matches against elite opponents were rare.
That changed dramatically in Miami.
Eala opened her campaign with a confident straight-sets victory over American Katie Volynets (what a great name for a tennis player!), setting up a second-round clash with former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.
Facing a Grand Slam winner in one of the biggest matches of her career, Eala played fearless tennis as the katepunera that the Filipinos celebrate. She landed 74% of her first serves and produced a series of powerful groundstrokes to defeat the Latvian 7-6, 7-5 and reach the third round.
Shock Victory Over Madison Keys
Most observers expected Eala’s remarkable run to end in the third round against Madison Keys.
At the time, Keys was ranked world number five and was in extraordinary form. She had won the Adelaide International and followed that by capturing her first Grand Slam title at the 2025 Australian Open. Her only defeat in more than two months had come in the semi-finals of Indian Wells against Aryna Sabalenka.
On paper, the matchup looked daunting. On court, Eala delivered one of the performances of the tournament.
She outperformed Keys in nearly every major statistic, landing 70% of her first serves in the second set and winning over 73% of those points. Eala made just four unforced errors in the entire second set while striking winners with remarkable consistency.
The result was a stunning 6-4, 6-2 victory that sent shockwaves through the WTA Tour.
From the Last 16 to a Historic Quarter Final
Eala’s path to the quarter-finals opened further when her next opponent, Paula Badosa, withdrew due to injury. The unexpected extra day of rest allowed the young Filipino to prepare for the biggest challenge yet: world number two Iga Swiatek.
Few believed the fairytale could continue.
Yet on March 26, 2025, Eala delivered one of the most inspiring performances of her career.
Displaying her trademark composure and Matapang spirit, she dominated the opening set 6-2. Eala landed 75% of her first serves, struck 10 winners, and committed just six unforced errors while Swiatek struggled with 19.
The second set became more competitive, reaching 5-5 as Swiatek attempted a comeback. But Eala maintained her remarkable level, breaking serve multiple times and closing out the match 6-2, 7-5. The Filipina was wagi.
The victory secured her place in the Miami Open semi-finals.
A Semi Final Battle With Jessica Pegula
Eala’s incredible run eventually ended in a thrilling semi-final against world number four Jessica Pegula.
The match proved to be a classic. Both players produced high-quality tennis before Pegula edged the contest 7-6, 5-7, 6-3.
Eala again impressed with her serving, landing 72.5% of first serves across the match and an extraordinary 80% during the second set which she won.
However, the difference came in the winner-to-error ratio. Eala struck 35 winners but also produced 50 unforced errors, while Pegula maintained consistency with 36 winners and just 28 unforced errors.
Despite the defeat, the tournament transformed Eala’s career. She earned 390 ranking points and surged from world number 140 to number 72 whilst gaining a growing reputation for her composure, humility and resilience.
Alex Eala Returns to Miami in 2026
One year later, Alex Eala returns to Miami in a very different position.
This time she does not need a wildcard. Her performances over the past 12 months have secured her a seeded position in the draw, meaning she will begin her campaign in the second round.
The Miami Open qualifying rounds begin on March 15, with the main draw starting shortly after. By midweek, Eala will know her opponent for her opening match, which is scheduled to take place on either March 19 or March 20.
Being seeded 32 also means that if she wins her opening match she could face a top eight seed in the third round. That scenario could produce blockbuster matchups against players such as Coco Gauff or world number one Aryna Sabalenka.
What Eala Needs to Succeed in Miami
If Eala is to produce another deep run in Miami, her first serve will again be a critical factor.
During her breakthrough tournament last year, she regularly landed between 70% and 75% of first serves. When her first serve percentage drops closer to 50%, her chances of winning matches decline significantly.
The rest of her game is already well suited to the Miami courts. Both her forehand and backhand are major weapons, and the faster surface in Florida can help her aggressive groundstrokes become even more dangerous and masigla.
If she can maintain her composure and keep unforced errors under control, another exciting week could lie ahead with cheers of sulong from her enthusiatic fanbase.
The Sunshine Swing now moves from the California desert to Florida, and tennis fans will once again be watching closely.
Laban Alex.
